Get to know a dog breed at the AKC Museum of the Dog!
Each month we are highlighting one of the 201 recognized breeds in the American Kennel Club. You’ll learn the history of the breed as well as key characteristics of their anatomy and coat that help them meet the standard. Activities include art-making, stories and books, a collectable breed fact sheet, and an opportunity to meet a live dog.
April’s Breed Spotlight: Newfoundland
The massive Newfoundland is a strikingly large, powerful working dog of heavy bone and dignified bearing. The sweet-tempered Newfie is a famously good companion and has earned a reputation as a patient and watchful ‘nanny dog’ for kids. The Newfie breed standard says that a sweet temperament is the “most important single characteristic of the breed.” Trusting and trainable, Newfs respond well to gentle guidance. These noble giants are among the world’s biggest dogs, and acquiring a pet that could outweigh you comes with obvious challenges.
This event is free for Members and included with General Admission. Please be sure to purchase your General Admission tickets for the date of the event.
This event is SOLD OUT. Please consider tickets to a future Furry Friday event!
Special for April 19: Spring in Your Step!

How do police K-9s protect New York City? What does it take to be a K-9 handler?
Find out during this presentation and scentwork demonstration from the NYPD Transit Bureau K-9 unit. Meet and greet with Officer Jaime and K-9 Brophy to learn more about the training required to become an effective detection dog team.
It’s the perfect afternoon activity during the New York City public schools spring break week. And while you’re here, check out our special exhibition, The Dogs That Serve, which showcases the K-9 and handler bond through photography by Margaret Foxmoore of the NYPD Transit Bureau K-9 unit. Exhibition on view through May 5, 2024.
This event is free for Members and included with General Admission tickets. Reserve your tickets for April 25th using the “Buy Tickets” link.
The variety of responsibilities held by working dogs is remarkable. From water rescue, to detection, more government and civil service agencies than you may imagine rely on the innate skills, dedication and companionship that are provided by their canine partners.
In 2016, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation initiated a unique program, which brought two Crisis Response Canines to the team that is deployed after mass casualty events. These two purpose-bred Facility Dogs, Wally and Gio, are a core part of the FBI’s response to mass casualty, and travel across the country to support survivors over the days following such tragedies.
In connection with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (April 20-27), the AKC Museum of the Dog is thrilled to welcome these dedicated Special (Canine) Agents, Wally and Gio, to the Museum! They’ll be joined by their handlers, who will talk about how Wally and Gio support survivors, and all about their work life. We’ll also be joined by Wally and Gio’s breeders, Assistance Dogs of the West, and trainers. Facility Dogs are purpose bred, and you’ll learn about the process, from breeding to training to supporting people.
The event will be from 9:45am to 11:30pm on Saturday, April 27th. Access to the Museum and this event is free for entries that take place between 9:30 and 11:30am. Tickets must be reserved in advance through the registration link. The Museum will resume regular operation and entry fees beginning at 11:30, with last admissions at 5:00 pm.

Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the program. No previous art making experience required and all materials will be provided. Admission to the Museum is included in the ticket price.

Participants will enjoy fun photo ops as well as an informational talk about the intersection of dogs across various fandoms in the sci and fantasy genres from NYC’s own Brian Levine.
