Get to know a dog breed at the AKC Museum of the Dog!
Each month we are highlighting one of the 200 recognized breeds in the American Kennel Club. Activities include art-making, stories and books, a collectable breed fact sheet, and an opportunity to meet a live dog.
January’s Breed Spotlight: Brussels Griffon
In the early 1800’s, the coachmen of Brussels, Belgium commonly kept small terrier-type dogs to keep down the rat population in their stables. In the 1870s, the dog-loving Queen of the Belgians, took a liking to the breed and with that royal patronage, the Griff’s future was assured. They became all the rage among the queen’s courtiers, and kennel keepers of the upper classes further refined the breed, making the body smaller and the face more humanlike. Griffs are alert, sociable, and easily trained and very much like to stick to their special human.
This event is free for Members and included with General Admission. Please be sure to purchase your General Admission tickets for the date of the event.
The Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. We will open for regular hours Wednesday through Sunday, 11:00am – 6:00pm with last admission at 5:00pm.
